Constructing Accessible Care for Leonard Cheshire Disability
A century in the making: 2017 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of this charity’s founder, Leonard Cheshire. With a vision to support disabled people in the UK and around the world, Leonard Cheshire Disability is constantly working to improve the lives of disabled people and maximise their potential.
Intium were proud to help with the improvement of a current facility located in Huntingdon, and we undertook many parts of the work out of hours in order to minimise the disruption to the service provided to those who benefit from it so greatly.
Works comprised of a new build single-storey activity room, a service user’s Kitchen, staff room, manager’s office, WC facilities and a store room. We refurbished and upgraded 13nr en-suites, making them all DDA compliant within the ‘live’ care home; we fitted replacement suspended ceilings to corridors and common areas; new fire alarm installation throughout; upgraded the visitor’s WC and pressurised existing hot and cold water installations.
The new build single-storey extension, to form the activity room & kitchen, comprised:
- pile foundations
- beam and block floor
- load-bearing masonry
- TJI beam roof, with single ply membrane
- remote controlled, rain sensitive Velux rooflights
- aluminium windows and doors
The kitchen comprised:
- rise and fall sink units
- push-to-open cupboards
- base units
- Hoisting facilities for disabled and bariatric service users
The upgraded en-suite facilities, comprised:
- new BioClad wall coverings
- new sanitary ware
- floor finishes
- hoisting facilities
- new lighting
We also installed a new suspended ceiling grid and tile system to corridors and common areas, along with new fire alarms and lighting.
